It all starts with your DNA.
DNA is in each one of your cells.
DNA is a thin, long molecule; if stretched out, the DNA in each of your cells would be over six feet long. DNA is made up of a string of chemicals known as bases.
There are four types of bases, called A, C, G and T for short. A string of just over 3 billion of these bases makes the human DNA, also called the “human genome”.
The DNA Sequence
The order of these bases in the long DNA molecule is called the “DNA Sequence”. The order of these bases spell out the instructions to make you.
Amazingly, 99.9% of your DNA is identical to any other human on the planet. However, 0.1% difference means about 3 million DNA sequence differences are possible between two individuals!
But, what do all these DNA differences mean?
Are differences, bad? No.
Most of the variation in your DNA is what makes you unique. You can thank your DNA for the color of your eyes, hair and skin, and many other traits.
However, DNA is not destiny.
For one, most traits are a consequence of many DNA variants working together, just like orchestra music is the result of many instruments playing together in harmony. That is why there is no “height gene”, “fitness gene” or “good humor gene”.
On the other hand, the environment plays a big role.
Your nutrition, level of exercise, and social environment are all very important.
Your health is the result of the interaction of your DNA and the environment. A deeper understanding of your DNA can help you make better choices.
